Walmart’s two cents
Every penny counts for Pennsylvania resident Mary Bach. After being charged one dollar for sausage that should have cost 98 cents, Bach took Walmart to court on the grounds of unfair trade practices. This is her fifth lawsuit against Walmart, and she has yet to lose.
‘Beaches are too mainstream,’ says hipster beached whale
Beached whales are usually restricted to, well, beaches. But not for a 33-foot sei whale. The mammal was found 875 yards from the closest shoreline in Yorkshire, England. Although there have been many theories, the accepted theory is that the whale was brought in by a high-autumnal equinox tide, and it proceeded to roll onto its blowhole, subsequently suffocating it.
A 23-year-old West Virginian woman was arrested for allegedly stealing a hearse from outside a funeral home — with a dead body still in it. Angela Derhart was arrested the morning of Sept. 20 after police received a call about a stolen 1996 Cadillac Fleetwood. Officers recovered the vehicle in the town of Beaver, W.Va., with the corpse of an 85-year-old woman inside. Derhart confessed to the theft and was held at West Virginia’s Southern Regional Jail on $25,000 bail.
A Dutch airplane passenger was arrested at Rochambeau airport in Cayenne, French Guiana, after customs officials discovered more than a dozen hummingbirds in pouches sewn into his underwear. The birds were wrapped in cloth and taped into the pouches to prevent them from fidgeting. The passenger reportedly had a previous conviction on his record — also for smuggling hummingbirds.
