In its Pacific-12 Conference opener, the No. 16 Oregon women’s volleyball team used a dominant performance by redshirt junior Alaina Bergsma to break a five-game losing skid to Arizona in straight sets, 25-23, 25-10, 25-20.
The win was the fifth over Arizona for seventh-year Oregon head coach Jim Moore. Bergsma’s 19 kills marked her sixth match with more than 15 kills this year. She’s led the Ducks in that category in eight of nine matches this season. Sophomore setter Lauren Plum paced the team with 31 assists, a team-best three aces, seven digs, and two blocks.
Before the contest, the returning NCAA tourney qualifier Wildcats had a six-game streak and had received votes in all four AVCA national coaches polls this year. Oregon is now 8-1 on the season, their lone loss coming against then-No. 12 Minnesota on Aug. 27.
