The Oregon men’s tennis team kicked off the 2011 fall season over the weekend at the EWU Fall Classic in Cheney, Wash.
The Ducks were one of nine different schools that competed in the three-day tournament that featured both singles and doubles action, with redshirt senior Doug Mayeda, senior Sho Higuchi, and redshirt freshmen Michael Schaeffer and Sam Bush representing the Ducks.
After winning his first three matches of the tournament, Higuchi, a Tokyo native, reached the semifinal round of the Collegiate A Flight singles competition, before falling to Gonzaga’s Scott Sullivan 4-6, 0-6.@@http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=500&ATCLID=205292492@@
Meanwhile, Mayeda overcame an opening round loss to reach the Collegiate A Flight consolation final after four straight victories. Schaeffer and Bush made the collegiate debuts for the Ducks, combining for a 2-3 singles record for the weekend.
The Ducks will next be back in action on Friday when they travel to Fresno, Calif., for the Bulldog Classic. That travel roster will include sophomores Alex Rovello and Robin Cambier, senior Jose Izquierdo, juniors Aaron Clissold and Jeff Mullen, and true freshman Daniel Sardu.
