The Oregon men’s tennis team remained undefeated over the weekend with impressive wins over Idaho and Weber State.
Playing at a slightly unusual start time of 1 p.m. on Friday, the Ducks fell behind early, losing the doubles point by a score of 2-1 to Idaho. Freshmen Alex Rovello and Robin Cambier lost their first doubles match of the season, and only juniors Baptiste Faynot and Jose Izquierdo came away with a victory.
Yet, the Ducks made up for that disappointment with their singles play. Rovello, Faynot and sophomore Aaron Clissold won in straight sets, and Oregon ended up taking five of the six singles matches en route to an overall 5-2 victory.
“All in all it was a great win,” head coach Nils Schyllander told GoDucks.com. “I have great respect for the level of tennis Idaho can play … this was a great win for the direction of our program.”
Saturday’s matchup with Weber State proved far more comfortable. The Ducks swept through the doubles point to take the early lead, then overwhelmed Weber State by winning all six of the singles matches. Each singles match was won in straight sets.
“We showed up and played with the energy we need to play with today,” Schyllander told GoDucks.com. “The team did not have a letdown after the win against Idaho yesterday, and I was very impressed with that.”
With victories in their singles matches on Saturday, both Izquierdo and Rovello are now 6-0 on the season. Faynot, meanwhile, has won three straight singles matches.
