Outside hitter Frankie Shebby is no longer on the Oregon volleyball team and has a full release to transfer, an Oregon athletic spokesman confirmed Monday.
Shebby said she was released from the program for violating an academic contract she signed after her freshman year.
Shebby said her grades were at “rock bottom” during her freshman year at UO while juggling sports with school. She was then asked to sign a contract guaranteeing that she wouldn’t be late or miss any class or tutoring sessions, she said.
She was late to one tutoring session during fall term, but was given “pretty much a warning.” But when Shebby returned from winter break, the coaches told her she was dismissed.
“I don’t know how it changed over winter break, but it did,” Shebby said.
Oregon said Shebby was “dismissed after a violation of team rules” in an emailed statement, but didn’t make head coach Jim Moore available for comment.
Shebby, a native of La Mirada, California, played in 23 matches during her sophomore season in Eugene. She had 116 kills in 362 total attempts. She also had 81 digs and 2.02 points per set.
“I loved it here,” Shebby said. “I wouldn’t ever leave them [the team]. I thought it was a great team and probably has the most talent in the Pac-12 this next coming year. I’m happy for them, but it would’ve been nice to stay with them.”
As a freshman, she played in 31 matches and started in 13 while ranking No. 3 on the team with 2.55 kills per set. She was named to the Pac-12’s All-Freshman team.
PrepVolleyball.com honored Shebby in each of her four years of high school at Mater Dei. She was a Senior Ace at No. 44 and earned Top 50 accolades a junior. She was also a National Sophomore of the Year Finalist.
“At the end of the day, it was my fault,” Shebby said. “I was late to a tutoring appointment.”
Shebby said because UO is on the quarter system, she’s short on credits. She was going to transfer to USC, but couldn’t make the admissions requirements. This weekend, she will visit University of California, Santa Barbara.
