— Oregon baseball appeared to have turned its season around a week ago when it rattled of five consecutive wins. But the Ducks took another step backwards as they suffered a three-game sweep to UCLA over the weekend. The ugliest segment of the series came when the Bruins pummeled the Ducks 13-1 in the series finale on Saturday.
— The Ducks’ women’s softball team has been the class of the Pac-12 all season and captured another series win over the weekend thanks largely in part to a grand slam Geri Ann Glasco. With the Ducks trailing 4-1, Glasco cleared the bases and put the Duck ahead for good with a fifth inning slam that led Oregon to a 5-4 victory over Arizona State on Saturday.
— Six Oregon seniors played their last lacrosse match at Papé Field Sunday afternoon as the Ducks fell 14-9 to Colorado on senior day.
— Oregon walk on linebacker De’Quan McDowell has taken full advantage of a clean slate since Brady Hokes arrival. As Ryan Thorburn of the Register Guard writes, McDowell has caught the eye of the Ducks’ new defensive coordinator. After playing scarcely last season, McDowell is in line to receiver plenty of playing time during the fall.
— For Oregon distance running star Edward Cheserek, the season never ends. Literally. As Ken Goe of The Oregonian writes, Cheserek and his Oregon distance teammates are in the midst of completing their third varsity season this calendar year. Distance runners are the only athletes in all of college sports who demand such long seasons from their bodies.
It is a task that even professional distance runners do not take upon themselves
“The argument can be made that this is just a recipe for bad things to happen,” Ellen J. Staurowsky, a professor of sport management at Drexel University, said. “For burnout to occur, to mental anguish, to over-training. In a labor context, this is why there is supposed to be a limit to the workweek.”
