It wasn’t their sharpest win of the season, but the Ducks did what they needed to pick up a 6-1 win over the Boise State Broncos Sunday afternoon.
The win was Oregon’s seventh in a row and improves its home record to 7-0.
“We came out a little sluggish, but like we’ve done the whole year, we showed our character and fought back and ended up winning decisively,” Oregon head coach Nils Schyllander told GoDucks.com after the match.
The Ducks earned a gritty win on the doubles side to jump out to a 1-0 lead, despite early struggles on all three courts. No. 36 doubles pair Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno won 6-3 in the No. 1 doubles spot for the Ducks over Boise pair Kyle Butters and Toby Mitchell, despite trailing 3-2 early in the match. The win improved Amos and Soemarno’s doubles record to 11-2 on the season.
Their win followed a win by Oregon duo Daan Maasland and Simon Stevens, who topped Abe Hewko and Lewis Roskilly 6-4. 
“I think we were kind of tired; we started out a little bit slow,” Soemarno said. “(The Broncos) were making a lot of balls early, but once we got settled in everything started going our way.”
On the singles side, Amos continued his steady play and earned his 15th win, this time playing in the No. 3 spot for the second straight match. Thomas Laurent captured a crucial 6-3, 6-1 win after trailing early in the match. It was the second consecutive match in which Laurent dug himself in an early hole, rallied back to win the first set then dominated the second set. 
“(Laurent) has been playing great, great tennis. He has the ability to come back from any position,” Soemarno said. “Once you watch him play everyday, you know he can do it.”
Stevens clinched the team victory for the Ducks with a 6-4, 7-5 win at the No. 3 spot, and Cormac Clissold won tiebreakers in the second and third sets to pick up a win in the No. 5 spot. 
Maasland, the No. 49 singles player in the nation and Oregon’s lone ranked player, battled back to win at the No. 2 spot to sustain his recent hot streak. Maasland dropped the first set 6-3 to Boise State’s Toby Mitchell, but responded by winning the next two sets 6-3 and 6-2. 
A win over the Broncos was significant for the Ducks, as it was their second win of the weekend over a ranked opponent. It gives them a bit of momentum as they enter a period in which they won’t play a match for almost two weeks.
Oregon will be in action again when it faces No. 23 Minnesota at home on March 4. Should they sustain their ranking, the Gophers will be the highest-ranked opponent the Ducks have faced at home this season.
