— Recently hired Oregon defensive coordinator Brady Hoke addressed the media for the first time Thursday morning. He spoke of his plans to install a 4-3 defensive scheme and stated that Oregon’s defense will be “aggressive and chaotic” next season. Hoke also said that he has asked the coaching staff not to tell him about the current players on the roster, because he doesn’t want to go in with any preconceived notions.
“It seems like we’ve got a great group of kids. I don’t know if they’re football players yet — that’s to be determined — but everything from the administrative all down has been great,” Hoke said.
— Oregon sophomore standout Aaron Wise was named to the Ben Hogan Award Watch List on Wednesday afternoon. Wise was one of 25 players named to the list. The award is annually given to the top collegiate player in the nation and takes into account both NCAA and amateur tournament results.
— Kenny Jacoby of the Daily Emerald wrote a well-researched story about the cost of recruiting for Oregon football, and how that cost may be going up. The Oregon athletic program spent over $10 million on recruiting from 2008-2015, with over half of that money going to football. That doesn’t take into account the recent additions of lavish facilities such as the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex and the highly-anticipated Marcus Mariota Sports Performance Center.
— Former Oregon distance star Lukas Puskedra is one of a handful of former Ducks who will race in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Los Angeles on Saturday. Seven ex-Ducks, including Galen Rupp, will aim for a top-three finish and spot on the U.S. Olympic team. Chris Hansen of the Register Guard wrote a nice feature on Puskedra and his comeback story.
— Oregon baseball is ranked 14th nationally and fourth in the PAC-12 Baseball America’s preseason poll. Andrew Bantly of the Daily Emerald wrote a season preview of an Oregon squad who has made it clear that they fully expect to reach the College World Series this season.
— In NFL.com’s prospect profile of former Oregon wide receiver Bralon Addison, one anonymous executive from an NFL team offered an interesting take: “(Addison) is like a toy you say you want for Christmas and then you never play with it. I can guarantee that if we were to draft him, our coaches would say they have to find a way to get him the ball and then he’ll get cut or sit the bench because they can’t figure out how to use him.”
That scouting report compared Addison, who has been popping up in the 4th-6th round range in most mock drafts, to former Oregon receiver Josh Huff.
