The Ducks, simply, are streaking.
Streaking like they’ve never streaked before. Streaking better than any team not named Miami. Streaking right into the Rose Bowl, where those streaks could quickly turn to shrieks.
No. 7 Oregon has several notable streaks heading into Saturday’s matchup at UCLA (4-1 overall, 1-0
Pacific-10 Conference), ranked No. 25 in the coaches’ poll.
At the forefront of streaks for Oregon
(5-0, 1-0), the lone undefeated Pac-10 team, is 10 consecutive wins, which ties a school record and currently stands as the second-best mark in the country.
Then there’s Oregon’s road-winning streak, which stands at a league-best six games. Not to be forgotten are two consecutive wins over the Bruins, although that mini-streak is overshadowed by UCLA’s 37-19 all-time advantage.
“It’s our first trip to the Rose Bowl, hopefully to ensure a second one,” Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti said.
Individually, Onterrio Smith looks to set a school record with his sixth consecutive 100-yard rushing effort. Keenan Howry has caught a pass in 40 straight games and looks to get within one game of tying the conference record.
The streaking list goes on. As does Oregon’s desire
for improvement.
Despite averaging 38.8 points per game, third-best in
the conference, Smith said the Oregon offense has not had a complete game.
“We still haven’t arrived yet,” said Smith, who leads the Pac-10 with 122.4 rushing yards per game. “But our main thing is just to keep improving every game, and that’s what we’re doing.”
The Ducks’ defense brings it’s top-rated run stoppers, who allow 79.4 yards per game, to Los Angeles to battle UCLA’s top-rated run offense, which averages 173.2 yards per contest.
“If you’re going to compete for a championship, then you’ve got to beat the champions,” said UCLA head coach Bob Toledo, a former Oregon offensive coordinator. “This will be a heck of a football game. Oregon without a doubt is the best team we have seen. They do a great job of execution and they find a way to win.”
Last week in Corvallis, UCLA redshirt freshman Tyler Ebell notched 203 rushing yards after starting tailback Manuel White went down with an injury that will also force him to miss at least this week’s game.
Senior quarterback Cory Paus passed for a career-high 378 yards as the Bruins totaled 625 yards in the 43-35 win over Oregon State.” They have tremendous balance across the board,” Bellotti said. “Cory Paus is playing very good football. They can spread the ball around in terms of having a lot of able bodies that can carry the football.”
Paus will look to spread an Oregon defense that allowed Arizona’s Jason Johnson to pass for 302 yards in Oregon’s 31-14 win in Tucson last week.
Playing against their first ranked team of the season, the Ducks are 2.5-point underdogs.
But that is of little concern to the Oregon players.
“It isn’t our job to worry about what the media or anyone says,” Smith said. “Our thing is to put into play what our coaches call for.”
Oregon’s trip to Los Angeles will mark a homecoming for most on the Ducks’ roster. Of the 60 players on last week’s travel roster, about two-thirds played high school football in California.
“It’s a lot better to visit with friends and family after a victory than it is after a loss,” Bellotti said.
Not that it’s of extreme importance, but no Oregon player has been named Pac-10 Player of the Week this season.
That could easily change Saturday, along with many other notable streaks.
