Prefontaine Classic
moved to June
Tom Jordan, meet director for the Prefontaine Classic Grand Prix, announced Wednesday that the 29th version of the event will be held on June 19 at Hayward Field.
The meet was held on May 24 last year.
It will be the 10th year in a row the race will be part of the International Amateur Athletics Federation Grand Prix circuit. It is also the third straight year it will be part of USA Track & Field’s Golden Spike Tour Series.
Moving the Prefontaine to June will make the event the last invitational meet in the United States in 2004 before the Olympic Trials are held in Sacramento, Calif., on July 9.
Tickets can be purchased in person beginning on April 7. They can be bought at the Casanova Center or by calling 1-800-WEBFOOT.
Online ticket sales will begin March 31 and can be purchased through Oregon’s Web site, www.goducks.com.
Men’s golf inks two
The Oregon men’s golf team signed two recruits from Southern California on Thursday.
Yorba Linda native Derek Sipe and Joey Benedetti, who hails from Huntington Beach, signed National Letters of Intent.
“I’ve seen them both play, and they are really good golfers,” head coach Steve Nosler said in a press release. “They both have a chance to come here and play right away. Derek has a very impressive résumé and understands how to win a tournament. Joey doesn’t quite have the same background, but I think he has a chance to be just as good. I’m really excited because I think the two of them together should provide a solid base for our team for the next several years.”
The Ducks will lose seniors Mike Sica and Jimmy White to graduation after this season.
Garbin garners
Pac-10 honors
Oregon’s Nicole Garbin was named to the Pacific-10 Conference’s All-Conference Second-Team on Thursday.
Garbin led the conference in shots with 70. She ranked in the top 10 in assists with seven and points with 21. She had seven goals this season, which placed her ninth in the conference and tied for eighth with two game-winning goals.
The junior was the only Duck to be named to the team.
Ferreira signs two
Oregon volleyball head coach Carl Ferreira signed two players to National Letters of Intent Thursday.
Justine Petry and Karen Waddington signed the letters. Both stand 6-foot-2 and play the middle blocker position.
Petry, a Trumansburg, N.Y., native, was a first team Class C all-state selection in 2002. Waddington hails from Langley, B.C., and has led D.W. Poppy Secondary to a No. 2 ranking for most of the season.
