Board of Directors

ABOUT

The Daily Emerald is published by Emerald Media Group, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Formerly the Oregon Daily Emerald, the news organization was founded in 1900 and in 1971 became an independent organization — separate from the University of Oregon (UO). Its mission is to train students, serve the UO community and run a financially sustainable nonprofit business. The Emerald produces a weekly newspaper on Mondays, magazines, website, e-newsletter and social media. Ethos, a quarterly glossy magazine, is also published under the umbrella of the Emerald Media Group. The mission of Ethos is to elevate the voices of marginalized people who are underrepresented in the media landscape.

ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE

The Board of Directors is the Corporation’s governing body. The Board of Directors provides oversight and advice to the Editor in Chiefs and President and sets the Corporation’s policies and strategic direction. The Board of Directors does not manage the Corporation’s day-to-day affairs and has no role in its editorial decisions. The Editor in Chiefs and the President run the Corporation’s daily operations and work together to set a strategic direction for the Corporation. The Editor in Chiefs manage the Corporation’s news operation across all print and digital platforms. The President manages the Corporation’s business operations, including advertising, finance, contracts, legal, personnel and marketing. Both positions report to the Board.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The authorized number of Directors shall be no fewer than 10 and no more than 12. Board positions include:

Student Employee Members: Three members are student employees of the Corporation. The news, Ethos and business departments each have one representative on the Board of Directors.
University Staff Members: Two members are faculty or staff employees of the University. One member shall be a faculty member or officer of instruction at the University. Another member shall be a staff employee or a non-teaching faculty member or officer of administration.
Student At-Large Members: Three members are University students from the general student body. They are appointed by the Board of Directors and may not be employees of the Emerald.
Community At-Large Members: Three to five members are community members appointed by the Board of Directors. The community at-large positions should be filled by subject-area experts who can ensure the Corporation’s long-term sustainability.
