The Daily Emerald is providing live coverage of the University of Oregon’s pro-Palestine encampment, which began on April 29 at 7 a.m. All of our coverage on the encampment can be found here.
Below is the Emerald’s coverage of May 5, the seventh day of the encampment.
A quiet weekend at the UO pro-Palestine encampment wrapped up on Sunday, as the group of nearly 150 tents prepared to enter its second week on the Memorial Quad. Media liaisons in the encampment largely avoided talking to outside media for the day after doing so for six consecutive days.
In an email statement, a UO spokesperson confirmed that negotiations “continue” between the university and student negotiators and are expected to resume on Monday. The statement also indicates that the university is “actively working to prevent unnecessary escalation” in regards to police presence at the encampment.
At least 28 additional UO staff and faculty signed a letter to university administrators in support of the encampment since last night, bringing the total to at least 74 as of this writing.
Students at the encampment announced they had received all necessary supplies to deal with inclement weather, instead requesting that further donations go to their relief fund for Palestine.

Updated 1:00 p.m.
It has been an uneventful day at the encampment thus far as the participants attempt to dry out after three days of heavy rain.
There will be a mandatory “re-orientation” for all participants this afternoon, followed by a “town hall” at 5:30 p.m. and karaoke night at 8:30 p.m.
The guest speaker talk that was scheduled for 2:30 p.m. with singer-songwriter David Rovics has been canceled.
The UO Coalition for Palestine posted on social media yesterday requesting additional materials after an influx of rain began to flood many tents throughout the camp. The coalition requested items including rain coats, socks, pants and other waterproof gear.
Around 10 a.m. the coalition announced on social media that they had received everything that had been requested. At 12:30 p.m. the coalition announced that they had closed their supply donation.
“We have plenty of supplies,” read the post. “Instead of donating items to us, we ask you donate to our Palestine relief fund.”
An earlier post said the fund had raised over $900 as of yesterday morning.
The coalition said that they were currently unable to reimburse people for their excess donations and that any extra items would be donated to those in need throughout the Eugene community.
No further rain is expected this afternoon with possible rain coming overnight into Monday morning.
The status of negotiations between coalition representatives and university administrators was not immediately clear. It is unknown whether any negotiation meetings were scheduled for today.
The Daily Emerald has reached out to coalition representatives and university administrators, who have declined to comment on ongoing negotiations.
