On May 1, 2024, the UO Native American & Indigenous Studies Academic Residential Community and illioo Native Theatre held the fourth annual Poetry in the Park event in honor of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women’s Day, which is celebrated on May 5th. The event featured NAIS ARC students reading a collection of poems as they walked between trees with red dresses hanging from the branches.
Red is the official color of the MMIW campaign, and according to programs handed out at the event, it “goes deep and has significant value. In various tribes, red is known to be the only color spirits see. It is hoped that by wearing red, we can call back the missing spirits of our women and children so we can lay them to rest.”
