The Oregon track and field team ended their stay in Seattle on Saturday by winning four events: the 3,000, 60 hurdles, 4×400 relay and high jump. Both the men’s and women’s teams posted scores high enough to place them both in the top five at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships.
The men finished third with 88.5 points, while the women placed fourth with 66.5 points.
Freshman distance runner Edward Cheserek continued to impress and used the final 200 meters of the 3,000 to build a distinguishable gap between himself and the field. Cheserek’s winning time of 7:47.20 was the second fastest time both in Oregon and NCAA history.
Elsewhere, Johnathan Cabral posted a personal best in his heat that won him the 60-meter hurdles. Cabral’s 7.68 tied the meet record and is only a one-hundreth of a second away from the school record. Freshman football player Devon Allen finished third in the event with a time of 7.92.
The men’s 4×400 relay team wrapped up a successful day by winning the event with a time of 3:06.99. The contingent of Marcus Chambers, Arthur Delaney, Jack Galpin and Mike Berry currently ranks 11th among NCAA teams, which still puts them on the bubble for NCAA qualification.
On the women’s side, Chancey Summers and Lauren Crockett finished 1-2 in the high jump. Summers won the competition by clearing 5-10 (1.78 m) and Crocket tied for second after clearing 5-8 (1.73 m). Both marks currently position the two to be in the NCAA Championships as the pair rank among the top 16 in the NCAA this season.
The Ducks will now take a break from action until March 14-15 when they partake in the NCAA Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. The team will find out the final list of participants for the Championships on Tuesday, March 4.
