On a night when half of Reser Stadium didn’t come back out for the second half of play, the Oregon Ducks with the 118th meeting of the Civil War with a 47-19 victory over rival Oregon State.
Oregon scored early and often against the Beavers, not letting up until the score was 30-0 with 9:48 left in the second quarter.
Marcus Mariota accounted for 406 total yards of offense and six touchdowns. He went 19-for-25 for 367 yards and four touchdowns while adding 39 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Additionally, Royce Freeman ran for 135 yards on 22 carries while Byron Marshall added six catches for 131 yards receiving and a touchdown, most of which coming on a 77-yard TD pass from Mariota early in the second quarter.
On third-and-seven from the Ducks’ 23-yard line, Mariota hit Marshall in stride who then threw off a would-be tackler into another potential Oregon State tackler before trotting in the final 25 yards untouched for the score.
At that point, with the score 23-0, the game was pretty much in hand, especially the way the defense was playing.
Oregon’s defense held the Beavers to just three points (on a last second field goal before the half) and 159 yards of total offense in the first half. Despite Storm Woods’s 128 yards of rushing, the Ducks held Sean Mannion and the Oregon State passing attack to just 187 yards of passing.
Key plays:
– Mariota gets his first touchdown of the evening with a 29-yard pass to a wide open Charles Nelson on a wheel route on the Ducks’ first drive of the game.
– Wogan hits a 30-yard field goal midway through the first quarter to give the Ducks a 9-0 lead.
– Freeman makes a spectacular one-handed touchdown catch to give the Ducks a 16-0 lead early in the second quarter.
– With Oregon State punting and the Ducks up 16-0 in the second quarter, Nelson muffs a Beavers punt but the balls rolls out of bounds, giving Oregon the ball.
– Three plays after the muffed punt return, Mariota hits Byron Marshall for a 77-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 23-0.
– Just for good measure, and to give his arm a break, Mariota runs 23 yards for a touchdown to make the score 30-0 with over 9 minutes left in the second quarter.
– The Beavers get a last second field goal from 39-yards out to make the score 30-3 at the half.
