After freshmen have finished unpacking their last boxes and saying their final goodbyes to their parents, they can jump right into experiencing college life. University of Oregon Housing has arranged a weekend full of events for incoming students to enjoy.
Thursday: Ducks N2 the Rec From 9 p.m. until midnight tonight, freshmen can attend a mini festival at the Student Recreation Center. Free food, music and prizes will be offered while students experience the SRC’s activities, which include fitness classes, sports and rock climbing.
Friday: “We are Oregon” Pep Rally Freshmen learn what it means to be a Duck fan at a 4 p.m. pep rally at Hayward Field. The rally will celebrate Oregon Athletics and teach incoming students the Oregon fight song. At the end of the rally, the new class of freshmen will head down to the field and form the Oregon “O.”
The Flock Party After the pep rally, there will be a chance for freshmen to party with other incoming freshmen at the Erb Memorial Union. From 5 p.m. to midnight, freshmen will be able to check out student clubs, listen to music, sing karaoke and pose with their friends for a photo booth. Here’s the entire schedule for the evening.
Saturday: Hike up Mount Pisgah Mount Pisgah provides the perfect dose of nature for incoming freshmen who chose to attend the UO for the outdoor attractions. A shuttle bus will provide transportation to Mount Pisgah, with pick ups and drop offs being made on 15th Avenue at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. The hike is 1.7 miles with an elevation of 1,050 ft. and will be led by the UO Outdoors Program.
Clean Walk to Autzen The bi-weekly walk over the Willamette River will get a dose of community service. Incoming freshmen can take the walk to Autzen Stadium and clean up trash along the path. The group will be meeting at 1 p.m. on 13th Avenue and Agate Street.
Get crafty at the Craft Center The EMU has a brand new Craft Center, and freshmen have the chance to create their own crafts for free. Classes range from ceramics to glass blowing. The classes are open from 1 – 5 p.m.
Movie Screening Freshmen can grab their new friends and go see a movie on the big screen — without having to pay for tickets. Ducks After Dark will be screening “Transformers: Age of Extinction” in PLC 180. The screening will begin at 3 p.m.
Super Smash Bros. tournament: The Showdown III Sit down, grab a controller and play Super Smash Bros. at LLC. The event begins Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and lasts until midnight. Players can choose between Melee, doubles and singles. The cost for this event is $10 for singles and $5 per player for doubles. For more information check the event’s Facebook page.
Saturday Nightlife The EMU Amphitheater will be converted into a giant welcome party for incoming students. The jungle-themed party will have go-go dancers, magic, DJs, free food, body and face painting, casino game, hypnotism and comedy.
Freshmen Convocation Week of Welcome officially ends with the university’s formal welcome to first-year students and new faculty alike. You’ll learn the values of the UO while taking part in one of the oldest WOW traditions. Convocation begins at 3:30 p.m. in Matthew Knight Arena. Student check in time begins at 3 p.m.
