Sofia Bell opened the scoring in the second quarter with two straight three-point makes. The threes seemed like it could spur an Oregon comeback. However, Dyani Ananiev responded with a three of her own to maintain a seven point lead for the Pilots. Another Portland three, this time from Maisie Burnham, put the Pilots up by double digits again 28-16. From that point on Portland never looked back.
Kennedi Williams scored the first basket of the game on a fastbreak layup to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead. It was the last lead Oregon would have in the game. An ice cold start for the Ducks saw them fall behind 13-2 while making just one of their first 13 shots from the field. Turnovers continued to plague Oregon as it recorded five in the first quarter. Solid defense from the Ducks on the other end helped them stay within striking distance of the Pilots as they were able to grab four steals in just the first quarter.
Portland made four of its seven three-point attempts in the quarter. Oregon trailed 20-10 at the end of the first.
The typically stingy Oregon defense was given no favors by the offense. Rarely were the Ducks able to defend with a set defense in the first half due to an atrocious 16.7% field goal percentage in the half. A 23-2 run from Portland to end the half gave them a 46-18 halftime advantage. A brutal full court press and aggressive perimeter defense were too much for Oregon as it recorded 14 turnovers in the first half alone.
The Pilots picked up where they left off at the end of the first half. The lead swelled up to 36 points as the Ducks were unable to make any headway in closing the gap. Bell, one of the only bright spots for Oregon in the game, made her third three of the game. It did little to stop the bleeding, however. The Ducks showed signs of life late in the third quarter as they rattled off a 9-2 run to bring the deficit back below 30 points. 67-38 was the score at the end of three.
Oregon was able to keep Portland from expanding its lead even further in the fourth quarter, but still lost the quarter 24-22. The game ended in a 31-point loss for the Ducks.
A normally stingy Oregon interior defense allowed 38 points in the paint in the game. Kennedy Basham recorded four blocks while she was on the court. However, the Pilots were able to get anything they wanted inside for most of the game.
Grace VanSlooten led the Ducks in scoring with 15 points, but did so on a somewhat inefficient 7-17 from the field. She tied her career high with 16 rebounds in the game. Bell made four of Oregon’s five three-pointers in the game, but was 4-13 overall.
On the other side, Portland was led by Burnham and Ananiev who both had 15 points in the game. Three other Pilots recorded double-digit scoring performances.
Oregon will have a few days off before they take on the Baylor Bears on Dec. 3
