The Ducks’ continued their fall campaign with an emphatic display of speed and power as they finished the weekend 4-0 in games against Boise State, Western Washington, College of the Siskiyous and Oregon Tech.
Oregon’s pitching was the story this weekend with the Ducks’ allowing just four runs over the course of the weekend.
Senior Raegan “Reggie” Breedlove, who appeared in all four of the Ducks’ games, threw 11 and two-thirds innings for Oregon and allowed just one run. “That’s the stuff we need from Reggie,” head coach Melyssa Lombardi said. “I thought she threw really well today, I thought she had really good energy on the mound, worked ahead, and fed the defense ground balls. I mean that’s what Reggie does for us.”
The Ducks’ got off to a hot start in game one and would not let up. “I really like how these guys came out. Boise State is really really good,” Lombardi said after the Ducks’ 10-0 victory. “That’s a post-season team and to play a postseason team in the fall, we needed that.”
Oregon certainly looked the part against the Broncos. The Ducks’ dominance continued throughout the rest of the weekend.
None of the Ducks’ new faces looked timid as freshman Ayanna Shaw and Katie Flannery in particular shined for Oregon. “Her [Shaw] and our young ones I think are doing a really nice job, you can see how fast she is,” Lombardi said. “She’s got some good power to drive runners in.”
Filling in the irreplaceable spot of Terra McGowan, transfer Emma Kauf had five hits over the weekend and blasted a go-ahead home run in the Ducks’ 5-0 win over Western Washington.
Ariel Carlson added a three run double to cap off the Ducks’ 21-1 victory over College of the Siskiyous.
“She was clutch all weekend long,” Lombardi said of Carlson. “Every time she came up with runners in scoring position, I’m pretty sure she drove them in. “
For the second weekend in a row, Oregon’s base running was outstanding —totaling 23 stolen bases over the span of the four games. The Ducks’ were consistently aggressive and took extra bases.
“I love our base running,” Lombardi said. “I like how they took the extra-bases, they are not hesitant, we did a good job stealing bags.”
The Ducks’ emphatically capped off their weekend with a 10-2 victory over Oregon Tech. Against the Owls, senior Kedre Luschar added two hits and two runs scored.
“You can see that she’s been in the weight room, you can see she has more power at the plate,” Lombardi said. “She’s running really well, she’s very confident in what she’s doing.”
“I thought we overall had a really good weekend,” Lombardi said. I think about where we were last year at this time compared to this year, you can definitely see this group, we are ahead of schedule.”
“I loved our pitching,” Lombardi said. “ I thought our pitching was really good.”
Really good might be an understatement. Oregon outscored opponents 46-4 over the weekend and will look to continue its dominance next Wednesday at home against Western Oregon.
