It’s March — which means it is time to soak up some rays outside on campus while attempting to do homework on the Lillis lawn. No worries though; we have you covered with five new trends to try this March as we make our transition into spring — all inspired by current runway fashion.
Slight Seventies: Spotted on numerous runways during Fashion Week, the ’70s trend is in this spring. Don’t opt for full on fringe vests and hippie bands yet, though; this season it’s all about subtlety.
With an eye for detail, this look can be modeled off the runway as well.
Sophomore Alexis Busso said, “I enjoy the ’70s look, especially the high waisted pants and shorts. I think the look is appealing, but this type of look can be difficult for everyone to pull off.”
An easy way to incorporate a bit of ’70s into your look is by adding bright retro accessories, as well as high-rise jeans.
Long and Light Coats: While it seems only natural to shed your peacoats as the sun comes out, select a longer coat made of thinner material for spring. If you can find a long coat in a neutral color, you will be golden (or khaki, perhaps). Recently, celebrities such as Kendall and Kylie Jenner have been stepping out in crop tops, high-rise jeans and you guessed it — long coats.
For extra adventure, go for the “safari” look, inspired by runway designers like Isabel Marant, Jason Wu and Acne.
Ponchos and Kimonos: Last spring kimonos graced Brandy Melville shelves and hung off the shoulders of stylish ladies. This spring kimonos is no different. They’re coming back with lighter materials and unique patterns.
Sophomore business major Mackenzie Gray, however, isn’t a fan. “I think ponchos are quite unnecessary to be honest,” she said.
Though not for everyone, ponchos can add an unexpected element to any outfit, with patterns ranging from floral to mixed animal prints. Layer it with a basic white t-shirt, jeans and a simple sandal to keep your look light and breezy for spring.
Joggers: Joggers have been a staple for men opting for casual street style, but they are now popping up for ladies too. However, these ladies’ joggers will not feature a drop crotch. Instead, they will fit like a skinny jean and may end a few inches above the ankle.
This look is versatile and can easily be dressed up or down. Joggers look cute with any type of shoe. Try a wedge for a fancy lunch, and a Ked for campus.
Sporty: The Athleisure look continues to be popular this year. We will see it continue into spring with loose semi-sporty looking tank tops that serve as a day shirt or a workout tank. More bold leggings are evolving out of athletic apparel brands and they are transitioning into our day-to-day look with ease.
“The sporty look works on campus,” said UO student and American Apparel employee Katie Leimbach. “I think a lot of girls go for it. Its nice for campus style, but I don’t personally sport the sporty look.”
For this look, try a full-length legging with a mild color pattern and style it with a plain white tank. The sporty look is a safe go-to this spring that will keep you looking trendy, even in a rush.
