Interim President Scott Coltrane has announced a plan to fight sexual assault.
Students at the University of Oregon received an email Friday from Coltrane’s office detailing the UO’s anti-sexual assault plan.
The University Senate has been pressuring the administration to announce their plans since November, when their Task Force to Address Sexual Violence and Survivor Support released “20 Students Per Week,” their recommendation to the university of how to prevent sexual assault on campus.
In February, Coltrane said that the university had finished reviewing such recommendations and were in the midst of creating their plan.
Here is a list detailing their plan:
- Hiring an assistant vice president for sexual assault. The position will have “authority, responsibility, and access to all of the divisions on campus that work to address sexual assault,” Coltrane said in the email.
- Committing $500,000 to the effort for new “prevention and response staffing and programs.”
- Establishing an advisory council.
- Launching a bystander intervention program to train students on how to prevent sexual assault.
- Increasing the number of campus investigators and confidential reporters, which allow for more survivors to report with less consequences.
Coltrane and administration were criticized during the intervening period for taking their time in turning these recommendations out. In his speech to University Senate on Feb. 11, Coltrane acknowledged these criticisms.
“I received communication this week saying ‘move faster, move faster, you’re not doing anything,’” Coltrane said at the time. “But we are.”
