Major: International studies
Dream Job: I would like to be an immigration attorney and provide low cost services for folks who are trying to apply for a ciley status or who are refugee status and are trying to bring more family members over and that type of thing.
Why are you attending UO?
Well, I came to visit after being accepted, and I love the environment. It has a very communal atmosphere and everyone is kind and welcoming and it was a little different of a place from where I am from. I have had a lot of good opportunities because of this school.
How/why do you want to change the world?
I think that one of the biggest problems facing the world right now is the loss of community space and that can take like a lot of different forms. With impoverished communities, gentrification is a big issue and you have communities that have been located somewhere for a really long time that are being pushed off of that communal area. With refugees you have communities being displaced from where they’re (originally) from. Basically whatever I end up doing, I want it to be something so that I can provide people with basic necessities, so that they can go forth and focus on rebuilding their communities so they need that protection and those basic necessities to go forth and do that.
What has been the best part of your college experience?
It’s definitely been meeting people from so many different backgrounds and from so many different places, and I definitely would not have met without my experiences at the UO. There have been so many unique opportunities put on throughout campus that have connected me with some incredible people. I went on an alternative spring break to Spain. Also, the Inside-Out (Prison Exchange) Program here at the University of Oregon, it’s an incredible opportunity. It really changes how you conceptualize the world.
What are you proud to have been involved with at UO?
Through my time with the Clark Honors College Student Association, that has been a very supportive and enriching community, and they have been very supportive in allowing me to foster new ideas. Through my time with them I was able to start a tutoring program with the John Serbu youth detention facility. What I am most appreciative of the Clark Honors College Student Association is they were able to help me reach out to facilitators so I could get that program off the ground. That was really great support to have.
What are some of your goals after college?
Right now I am looking for work as a legal assistant for immigration attorneys that work within refugee agencies, that would be ideal. A longer term goal for in a couple of years, the United Nations has an entry-level program for the Refugee Status Determination team which I would love to be a part of. The would be the best thing ever!
Who’s your biggest role model/influencer?
My parents have both been incredibly influential. I was a girl scout for 12 years, and my mom was the troop leader. She always encouraged us to go after things we were interested in and find different ways to be involved our community. My dad is a social worker and he’s also very invested and very active in finding different ways to be involved with the community. Both of them have been very supportive in fostering the idea of finding ways to do good in the community.
