Oregon softball (46-6) earned the No. 2 overall seed in the Eugene NCAA regional bracket and will host BYU, North Dakota State and Fresno State next weekend.
BYU (39-12) will be Oregon’s first test on Thursday at Howe Field. First pitch is set for 5 p.m., with a live video stream on GoDucks.com.
“It’s a tough one,” head coach Mike White said of the bracket. “I think it’s a tough little bracket for a No. 2 seed… It’s great because there’s no SEC teams in our bracket.”
White said the program will look to acquire game tape on the three other teams in its bracket tonight and will likely practice tomorrow. He said the Ducks would have gotten Monday off if they were scheduled to play Friday.
“It’s going to be a quick week, a quick turnaround,” White said.
Oregon has advanced to the NCAA Championship in all six years under White. He has an all-time 15-0 record in NCAA Regional games.
Last time Oregon played BYU, it lost 6-5 in 2014. The Ducks faced Fresno State earlier this season, winning 3-0. Cheridan Hawkins got the start in that game, throwing seven complete innings and giving up just two hits.
“That’s a good matchup right there. We know what we’ve got,” White said of Fresno State. “Their pitcher threw good against us. It seems like eons ago.”
Hawkins stressed the importance of giving Howe Field a worthy goodbye in the coming weeks. If the Ducks are to win their regional bracket, they would advance to the Super Regionals and play at Howe Field one last weekend.
“I think it’s definitely important to give it a good going away, a goodbye,” Hawkins said. “A good trip to the College World Series wouldn’t be too bad of a goodbye.”
The Ducks are coming off a 2-1 series win over No. 17 Arizona, in which they clinched the Pac-12 Championship outright.
“When you get to postseason, it’s anybody’s game,” Takeda said. “The game of softball, anyone can win… When we get to postseason, people are going after each other pretty hard.”
Florida earned the No. 1 overall seed in the complete bracket.
