In an 11th hour change of heart, Chip Kelly decided to remove his name from consideration for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coaching position and will remain at Oregon, according to The Register-Guard.
The decision, according to The Guard’s Adam Jude, came just before midnight on Sunday evening. Though one source had confirmed that “It’s done,” and “all the boxes have been checked,” Kelly still had time to reverse the decision and would indeed do so.
As Tampa Bay general manager Mark Dominik told Rick Stroud of the St. Petersburg times, “His heart is still with college football and Oregon.”
Had he left Oregon, Kelly would have owed the school $3.5 million in buyout money, per his contract. According to the Guard, he also would have been obligated to give the school 15 days notice in writing before terminating employment.
