A Eugene Police Department officer was injured after an Oct. 9 fight with a University freshman who was resisting arrest. The freshman received violations for multiple offenses.
Sean B. Giblin, 19, from Lake Oswego, Ore., fled from police custody twice – including once in handcuffs – as officers tried to detain him for a disorderly conduct violation. According to EPD Public Information Director Melinda Kletzok, the University’s Department of Public Safety called EPD after receiving a call about a disorderly subject at Riley Hall, where Giblin tried to start a fight with a resident assistant.
According to an EPD press release, a DPS officer found Giblin in the University District Hospital parking garage and tried to detain him, but Giblin began fighting the officer and fled. An EPD officer arrived and Giblin was handcuffed and taken into custody. Giblin, however, managed to flee again, running from the officers handcuffed, with a DPS officer grabbing his arm.
The EPD officer caught up to Giblin and the DPS officer, finally taking him into custody. The EPD officer was injured after being propelled in the air while trying to take Giblin to the ground, Kletzok said, but the officer was evaluated at the hospital and released. The DPS officer also received scrapes, but was not treated.
According to the release, Giblin suffered little or no injury during the fight with the officers.
Giblin was cited for disorderly conduct, assault, interfering with police, resisting arrest, being a minor in possession and possessing less than an ounce of marijuana, Kletzok said.
Kletzok also said in an e-mail that aggressive subjects have recently become a problem for officers. “This term, officers are really being challenged with physically threatening behavior,” she said. “Injuries such as that suffered by our officer and also to a DPS public safety officer are a growing concern.”
