The ASUO Women’s Center is teaming up with Womenspace to collect unopened toiletry items for survivors of domestic violence.
Womenspace is an organization that provides shelter for domestic violence survivors and promotes educational awareness services for the community dealing with domestic violence issues.
In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the groups planted 13 purple bins around campus, including places such as The Duck Store and the University Health Center. Collected toiletry items will be donated to allow domestic violence survivors to obtain these basic necessities if they must leave home.
“The toiletry drive is an important campus event because it reminds us that it is our responsibility as a community to come together to support survivors of domestic violence,” said Rebecca Sprinson, sexual violence prevention and education coordinator for the ASUO Women’s Center.
The two groups, whose motto is “Every Home a Safe Home,” are holding up signs to advocate and petition for the safety and recovery of domestic violence survivors.
“We hope to raise awareness about domestic violence, recognize that it occurs, that it is unacceptable, and that there are resources available to assist survivors of domestic violence. By donating toiletries, students can provide comfort and support for survivors and their children who visit Womenspace,” said Hollie Putnam, public relations coordinator for the ASUO Women’s Center.
In cooperation with Greek Life, the ASUO Women’s Center also placed 11 bins in sorority houses.
“I am very proud that the sorority community is supporting this cause. It is so important that as young educated women, they take a stand to help others around them who are in need of comfort during such a terrible time in their lives,” Greek leadership advisor Amy Long said in a press release.
Not only do Womenspace and the ASUO Women’s Center want to raise awareness about domestic violence, they encourage students to volunteer their services to help survivors. Students can get involved with activities sponsored by the ASUO Women’s Center. Many of the services Womenspace provides are the direct results of the help and efforts of volunteers and interns.
“It is significant for people receiving donations to know that someone in the community knows they’re struggling and will help them,” said Margo Schaefer, Womenspace community outreach and volunteer coordinator. “That’s a gift in itself, and it’s a gift to the contributors as well.”
