Hiking
Eugene is home to two buttes within city limits that allow for a quick getaway from the city chaos. Skinner Butte is just north of downtown, neighboring the Willamette River. It is a short hike to the top, though it is also accessible by car. That is especially enjoyable at night, when the cityscape creates a light show for a memorable evening.
At the south end of Eugene, Spencer Butte attracts many hikers because of the breathtaking view with which they are rewarded. While the hike is more challenging, the panoramic view of Eugene and Lane County makes the effort a worthy one.
Biking
Famed for its biking community, Eugene caters to cyclists. The 12.5-mile bike path along the Willamette River provides an excellent view and an easy way to get around. Students frequently use the path when in transit from campus to Autzen Stadium and area apartments. For avid bikers, the Fern Ridge bike path offers a smooth ride starting at the fairgrounds and ending in West Eugene, near the airport.
Water Activities
The Willamette River runs right through town, making hot days more bearable. Rafting, tubing, kayaking and boating are all popular ways to enjoy the water. Rope swings sporadically line the riverbanks, creating a perfect summer swim. Fishing is also a common escape for those who enjoy the thrill of the catch. East of Eugene runs the McKenzie River, which is also a beautiful destination for adventure-seekers. Because it is fed by the surrounding mountain snow, the McKenzie stays cold throughout the year.
Snow Sports
For the winter months, a break from the stress of finals can be found in the Cascade Mountain Range. Willamette Pass Ski Resort is roughly an hour away and provides a plethora of slopes for downhill skiing and snowboarding. And for those looking for a milder activity, Willamette Pass also rents tubes for a fun day of sliding down the mountain – on your belly. Snow shoeing and cross-country skiing can be done just about anywhere there is snow. Many summer hiking trails are groomed for snow-trekkers, welcoming newcomers and veterans alike.
Parks
Hugging campus is the beautiful Hendricks Park, which in the spring makes for a wonderful walk among the blossoming rhododendrons. Within walking distance from Hendricks is a popular attraction, Pre’s Rock, where the late Oregon runner Steve Prefontaine lost his life. Another park that is appealing for its floral display is the Owen Memorial Rose Garden. Nestled between Skinner’s Butte and the Willamette River, the Rose Garden is home to an assortment of beautiful and exotic flowers. For less aesthetic entertainment and a more active day, head to Westmoreland Park down 18th Avenue from campus. Here you can find the sole disc golf course in Eugene. This activity is great for first-timers.
