Kaufman, who has been making independent films for more than 30 years, is screening “Poultrygeist” at Bijou Cinemas this weekend.
Kaufman is best known as the legendary co-founder of Troma Studios, which is the world’s longest running independent film company, according to the group’s Web site.
Troma has produced dozens of over-the-top cult films like “The Toxic Avenger,” “Tromeo and Juliet,” “Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D.” and “Class of Nuke ‘Em High.”
The latest Troma gorefest, “Poultrygeist,” is a dynamic mix of horror film, comedy and dysfunctional love story – complete with musical numbers.
The movie follows a recent high school graduate, Arby, and his former sweetheart, Wendy, who went to college and turned into a “left-wing, lipstick-lesbian liberal.”
The two meet again when Wendy is protesting an “American Chicken Bunker” restaurant that was built over the Tromahawk Tribe’s ancient burial ground.
Arby gets a job at the Bunker just to piss off Wendy and her new activist girlfriend, but things get sketchy when customers start dying in supernatural ways.
Troma pulled no punches with Poultrygeist; there’s teenage sex, toliet humor, racist jokes, hippies, naked lesbians, fast food, random songs like “Revenge is a Dish Best Served Fried,” dancing, blood, guts and, of course, chicken. Also featured are cameos by porn star Ron Jeremy and Kaufman himself.
The film will gross you out, make milk shoot out of your nostrils and even say the occasional “Aww, that’s weird but kind of cute.”
Along with three screenings of “Poultrygiest,” Kaufman will also be conducting two of his infamous “Make Your Own Damn Movie” master’s classes.
The classes will feature Kaufman’s signature twist on filmmaking and special effects. Rumor has it, the Toxic Avenger himself might make an appearance.
The Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts Center and UO’s Cultural Forum will both host “Make Your Own Damn Movie” on Saturday.
