Oregon’s club ice hockey team found its remedy after being swept by three Colorado schools last weekend: playing Portland State.
The Ducks, playing in Portland on both Friday and Saturday, beat the non-conference Vikings by a combined score of 20-3. The wins push Oregon’s record to 14-6-1.
Cam Forni scored six goals and added two assists in Friday’s 9-2 win, with defenseman Zach Gaynor scoring two goals. Sam Cehula recorded a season-high six assists.
On Saturday, the Ducks took 80 shots en route to a comfortable 11-1 win. Tom Stocklin and Jarett Cicirello each scored twice. The Ducks started sophomore goaltender John Barry in the second game, and Barry earned the win with 26 saves on the day.
“It was great to be able to have that opportunity,” Barry said. “Every time I was challenged with either a shot or a loose puck I felt really confident.”
The two teams will meet again this Thursday at Lane County Ice Arena, one day before the Ducks travel to Seattle to resume the final two games of the I-5 Cup Series with the Washington Huskies.
Club rugby
The women’s club rugby team finished third out of twelve teams at last weekend’s Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. The Dirty Ducks paid a price for their 4-1 record, however – six of the team’s 21 players were injured and unable to finish the weekend.
“If you bring down 30 people you can rotate new people in but playing six games in two days you just get beat down,” coach Greg Farrell said. “These gals are tough as nails, but after constant play like that, something’s got to give.”
The 20th-ranked Dirty Ducks beat three teams ranked in the nation’s top 12 before losing to Cal-Berkeley 17-12 in the semi-finals.
Oregon beat Western Washington 12-10, No. 10 UCLA 27-5, No. 12 Colorado 10-5 and No. 3 Stanford 26-12. After losing in the semi-finals, the Ducks won by forfeit against the University of California San Diego, which was down to only 12 players.
“They really stepped up and proved they belonged,” Farrell said. “It was the best tournament we’ve been to down there.”
