Oregon women’s tennis earned a split weekend in Lawrence, Kansas, dropping Friday’s match against Kansas 4-1 and winning Saturday’s match against William and Mary 7-0, the first 7-0 sweep in 31 matches for the Ducks.
The newly ranked No. 24 Ducks returned to action after defeating No. 23 Northwestern last week 4-3.
In Friday’s match against the Jayhawks, the Ducks began with a doubles win by Nia Rose and Julia Eshet over Tatiana Nikolaeva and Janet Koch 6-1.
The No. 10 duo of Shweta Sangwan and Alyssa Tobita and the freshman duo of Julian Lilien and Paiton Wagner then dropped their respective matches to give Kansas the doubles point.
In singles play the Ducks were no match for Kansas with Nikolaeva defeating Wagner and Sangwan dropping to Despoina Vogasari in straight sets.
Lilien then put the Ducks on the board, marking her fifth win on the season, but the Ducks then dropped the match after No. 2 Anastasia Rychagova defeated Tobita 6-2, 4-6, 6-0.
The following day against William and Mary was a much different story for the Ducks after they took the doubles point for the first time since Feb. 3 against Georgia State.
After Eshet and Rifanty Kahfiani dropped their match against Lauren Goodman and Cecily Wuenscher 6-1, Daniela Nasser and Lilien defeated Natalia Perry and Clara Tanielian 6-4 to tie the doubles match at one.
Sangwan and Tobita then secured the doubles point with a 7-6 win over Rosie Cheng and Olivia Thaler. This marks the first doubles win for Sangwan and Tobita since their Georgia State victory.
Wagner (6-2, 6-4) and Lilien (6-1, 6-2) quickly disposed of their opponents, giving Oregon the commanding 3-0 lead. Sangwan then closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over No. 120 Tanielian.
Following the victory, Tobita defeated No. 68 Cheng 7-5, 6-2 followed by a Nasser 6-3, 6-1 win.
Securing the 7-0 shutout was Eshet, who defeated Ekaterina Stepanova 6-1, 7-6.
This marks the first 7-0 shutout since the Ducks defeated Eastern Washington on Jan. 21 of last season.
After this short road trip, the Ducks will play host for their next five matches, starting this Friday, Feb. 23 against Baylor at 2 p.m.
