41st annual International Week begins today
The International Student Association will host its 41st-annual International Week, entitled “Kaleidoscope: Seeing Cultures in a New Light,” today through Friday.
According to the International Week Web site, http://gladstone.uoregon.edu/~asuoisa/inight2004.html, the purpose of International Week is to bring cultural awareness to the University community and general public. The event kicks off today at 11 a.m. with a parade down East 13th Avenue, followed by an opening ceremony in the EMU Amphitheater.
“(International Week is) not just a way for (students) to open their eyes to different cultures, but it also allows them to get involved and learn about the cultures,” ISA President Matthew Yeow said.
Cultural events — including dances, concerts and morning exercise hours — begin every day at 10 a.m. and run until 9 p.m.
“International Week is very diverse, and it shows cultures from a different view,” International Week Events Coordinator Silvia Wang said. “There will be henna, a tea ceremony, origami and presentations.”
The week will also feature a presentation on intercultural business communication, foreign films, games, an art exhibition and poetry from around the world. The foreign films include a Singaporean movie entitled “I Not Stupid,” a Swedish movie called “Together” and the Spanish movie “Talk to Her.”
“I would definitely go for International Week, just to have fun and learn something new,” freshman Remi Nagata said. “Also, I heard it is one of the largest multicultural events on campus, so I want to go and see it for myself.”
International Week will conclude with International Night on Sunday, which includes dinner at 5 p.m. and a show at 7 p.m. The complete schedule of events is available online at the International Week Web site or at the International Lounge in the EMU.
