Trees in the campus area have begun to show their brilliant fall colors. The University is home to species of colorful trees, including the red maple and oak.
The science of leaves: Plants take water and carbon dioxide and turn them into food using sunlight and chlorophyll, which gives leaves their green color. Many plants stop making food in the fall, so the chlorophyll goes away, which results in the orange and yellow colors. Red-colored leaves are made in the fall from food trapped in the leaves. Brown colors are also made in the fall and come from wastes left in the leaves.
