You can almost hear the slap of the pigskin as fall puts a chill in the air and students are drawn toward Autzen Stadium by the siren’s call of almost-free football tickets.
This year $1,396,845 of the student incidental fee has been used to purchase tickets for students to the Ducks home football and basketball games. The same money also pays for student access to all other Duck sporting events. Students can get tickets with a University student ID.
Athletic department employee Jason Harris said 6,100 tickets will be available for each of the Ducks’ four home football games during fall term. Additionally, 2,500 tickets will be offered for the Sept. 11 game against Indiana.
Harris said the decision was made to reduce the number of tickets offered for that game because most students will not be around.
The University is also offering 2,300 tickets to the Ducks’ winter term men’s
basketball games. Students will be able to get into most women’s basketball games by showing a current student ID.
Some women’s games may require tickets; that information can be found in the Emerald’s sports section the week of the game.
Students can pick up one ticket for any home game by showing their student ID at the ticket office in the EMU or at the
ticket office at the Casanova Center.
Student tickets are purchased from the athletic department by the Athletic Department Finance Committee using student money.
ASUO Accounting Coordinator Jennifer Creighton said that the number of student tickets has remained stable for several years, because each year all of the tickets are picked up. However, Creighton said it’s not clear how many students are actually using their tickets after picking them up.
Harris said if any student tickets
remain on the Tuesday prior to a home sporting event they will go on sale to the general public for general admission prices, which are $18 to $20 each. Harris said student attendance of sporting events is generally up but fluctuates based on how the team is doing.
“If we lose a little bit, it usually takes a while for attendance to pick up again,” Harris said.
There have been rumors that the Student Senate has considered eliminating the incidental-fee subsidized ticket system and replacing it with a system like the one used at the University of Southern California, Student Senator and ADFC member Kevin Day said.
Students at USC who wish to
attend games pay for tickets at the
beginning of the year and get a card that provides them with access to all the games, Harris said.
Day said there is some talk, but nothing official has been put into motion. Day also said he thought the change would be a bad idea.
“There are rumors, but there are always rumors,” said Day. “I don’t see the point of changing a working system.”
