University students will have plenty of chances to see homegrown theater productions during the 2004-05 school year, with the Theater Arts department bringing a wide range of plays to stages here on campus.
The season will start off with a
production of “Shakespeare Ala Carte” at the Robinson Theatre on October 1 and 2 at 8 p.m. A collection of scenes and monologues from the plays of William Shakespeare, the showing is part of a touring production organized by the Theater department, and will also be playing at schools and theaters outside of Eugene.
Another event scheduled for the Theater department on October 1 is the appearance of University alumnus Jeff Witty, who recently received a Tony award for writing the dialog and plot of the musical “Avenue Q.” The event is a fundraiser for the Theater department.
The next production of the year is “Vanities,” which will be performed as part of the department’s Second Season production and will take place at the Arena Theatre in Villard Hall. “Vanities” will run from October 27 to November 6. The Second Season will also perform Gertrude Stein’s “Dr. Faustus Lights the Lights” from February 2 to 12.
From November 5 to 20, a new musical by Sean Keogh, “Good Morning, Athens,” will be performed on the Robinson Theatre stage. On February 25, Theater department head Jeffrey Mason will be directing Arthur Miller’s “A View From the Bridge,” which will run through March 12, also at the Robinson Theatre.
Spring term productions will begin at the Arena Theatre with Diana Son’s “Stop Kiss” from April 20 to 30. The Robinson Theatre will host a new “devised work” from director John Schmor. Entitled “Kafka’s Parables,” the play is a performance created by University students based on the short stories of Franz Kafka. The production is similar to “This Ship of Fools,” which the department put on during the spring and fall of 2003.
There will also be a number of
performances through the Pocket Playhouse, a student-run organization which puts on five to seven shows per term. The shows range from old classics to new student-created productions. The Pocket Theatre is located in Villard Hall. Participation in the Pocket Playhouse is open to all students regardless of their major.
Admission to Robinson Theatre shows is $12 for the general public, $9 for seniors and University faculty/staff and $5 for University students. Times for plays vary. Information is available at darkwing.uoregon.edu/~theatre/Robinson%20Season/robinson.htm.
Admission to Second Season performances is $6 for the general public, $5 for seniors and University faculty/staff and $4 for University students. All plays begin at 8 p.m.
Admission to Pocket Playhouse productions is a $1 donation at
the door.
