Former University of Oregon cornerback Khyree Jackson died after a three-car collision at 3:14 a.m. in Prince George’s County in Maryland. Jackson, 24, who was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2024 NFL Draft, was set to begin his rookie season.
The former Duck spent just one year in Eugene after emerging from JUCO football and spending time at Alabama, but impressed immediately. He declared for the draft ahead of Oregon’s Fiesta Bowl matchup with Liberty, and racked up two sacks, three interceptions and 34 tackles in the 2023 season.
According to a press release from Maryland State Police, Isaiah Hazel and Anthony Lytton, both high school teammates of Jackson’s, also died in the crash. Passengers in the other two vehicles were uninjured. The preliminary investigation indicated that a silver Infiniti Q50 “attempted to change lanes while driving at a high rate of speed,” striking both of the other vehicles involved.
Investigators “believe alcohol may have been a contributing circumstance in the crash,” according to the press release.
Oregon football head coach Dan Lanning tweeted on Saturday morning, “RIP Khyree… Love you @Real_Khyree at a loss for words. I will miss your smile. Great player better person.”
The Vikings recently released a statement from Owners Mark and Zygi Wilf, Head Coach Kevin O’Connell and General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah.
“We are devastated by the news of Khyree Jackson’s death following an overnight car accident. Our thoughts are with Khyree’s family, friends, teammates and coaches, as well as all the victims of this tragic accident.”
Reports around Minnesota’s camp suggested that Jackson was slated to become a key member of the Vikings’ defense going forward.
Charges are currently pending an investigation and consultation with the Prince George’s County State Attorney’s office. The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation.
