Another dominant pitching performance from an Oregon starting pitcher occurred on Sunday in Corvallis.
But unlike the first two games of the weekend, that performance wasn’t soiled by the No. 22 Ducks’ bats.
Oregon (29-15, 12-10 Pac-12) lost the series, but won the finale 7-1 over No. 9 Oregon State (34-10, 13-8 Pac-12) to potentially take some momentum into the following weeks.
Oregon starter Kevin Seitter took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against one of the top teams in the country. And, despite what the series’ first two games would have alluded to, he had run support behind him.
After combining for just four hits across the first two games of the series, Oregon’s offense got going early on Sunday.
The Ducks plated two in the first and one in the second. After Jacob Walsh and Jeffery Heard both drove runs home in the first, a Mason Neville solo home run — the first of a two-homer game for Neville — gave Oregon an early 3-0 advantage.
The lead was cushioned in the fourth with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Chase Meggers and Neville’s second homer of the day, bringing his season total to 10.
Seitter finished the day going 7.0 innings with nine strikeouts while allowing just one run on one hit. Aside from the homer, he was virtually unscathed in his outing against the Beavers. He earned his fifth win of the season and his ERA now sits at 4.85.
Seitter has been an incredibly reliable Sunday starter for Oregon so far this season. His transferring from Quinnipiac certainly has benefited the Ducks greatly. With his team needing a win to avoid the sweep, he clutched up and showed out.
It was a sloppy day for the Beavers’ defense. Oregon State tallied three errors in the loss. The Beavers’ pitching staff, however, had a decent day. It was hurt by the long ball and errors at times, but it also collected 15 strikeouts over Oregon hitters. The Ducks struck-out a whopping 44 times in the three-game series against the Beavers.
Oregon State starter Eric Seugra earned the loss on a day where five different Beavers toed the rubber.
A Bryce Boettcher solo homer in the ninth capped off the offensive production that Oregon had waited all weekend for.
Ryan Featherston locked down the Ducks’ win with two full innings of one-hit ball. In a game that featured 27 total strikeouts, Featherston and Seitter combined for 12 of them.
While Oregon wasn’t able to win the Pac-12 series, the Ducks will have another opportunity to beat the Beavers and earn the season split on Tuesday as they host Oregon State at PK Park at 6.05 p.m.
