Around 11:15am on Oct. 14, the University of Oregon Police Department was dispatched to a break-in at 1109 Old Campus Lane around, the joint address of Villard Hall and the Miller Theatre Complex.
Upon arrival, UOPD officers discovered that 29-year-old David Gomez Jr. had unlawfully entered the university building with alleged intent to commit theft. When officers attempted to take Gomez into custody he allegedly resisted, leading to an unspecified incident resulting in an initial charge of resisting arrest in addition to charges of “attempt to commit a crime,” theft in the third degree and burglary in the second degree, which is a class C felony in the state of Oregon.
It is unclear whether any damage was sustained to the Miller Theatre Complex during the alleged burglary.
At the time of his arrest, Gomez was already on probation for a criminal mischief and harassment case from 2021. Gomez also had a warrant out for his arrest from Sept. 25 when he missed a court date regarding a separate case from August 2023.
In his initial court hearing on Oct. 16, Gomez retained public defender services, and had three of the four charges dropped. He was arraigned on the second degree burglary charge and for his outstanding warrant. The judge denied bail for Gomez, ordering him to remain in custody till his next hearing on November 20th.
