The first speaker in the ASUO’s schedule this fall will be Floyd McKissick, national chairman of the Congress of Racial Equality. The event on Oct. 4 is co-sponsored by the Eugene CORE chapter.
The next speaker on the program, according to Tony Hazapis, director of the ASUO Agency for Speakers and Debates, will be Richard Nixon, former vice-president of the United States.
The University’s invitation to the Republican party leader was sent three days before it was known that Nixon had accepted an invitation to speak to the Associated Oregon Industries and Oregon Retail Council on October 6 and 7.
Nixon Supporter Confirms
Howell Appling, former Oregon secretary of state and present chairman of the Oregon Nixon for President campaign, has confirmed that Nixon will speaker here on October 6, however.
The ASUO agency will also co-sponsor a lecture series with the Office of Student Affairs on drugs. The first session in the series will be October 16 and 17, called Drugs and the Student. It will feature Dr. Joel Fort. The next lecture will be November 27 and 28. Dr. Paul Blachly, Arthur Pearl, professor of remedial education, and Sidney Lezak will speak on Marijuana: Social, Medical and Legal aspects.
Dr. Kenneth Gaver, Dr. Robert Johnson and Dr. W.A. Brooksby will present the next program on Barbituates, Amphetamines and Narcotics January 9.
Drinking Behavior
Another program on February 27 and 28 entitled Alcohol and Drinking Behavior will feature Dr. Morris Chafetz, Dr. Dean Brooks and Dr. George Dimas of the Oregon State Board of Health. The final lecture in the drug series, April 16 and 17, will focus on the President’s Crime Report as it relates to alcohol and other drugs. Speakers will be Dr. David Pittman and Gerald Goldfarb.
Other speakers who have definitely accepted engagements include Harrison Salisbury, New York Times correspondent who will speak on the Viet Nam war, Mrs. Marguerite Oswald, mother of Lee Harvey Oswald, and Vance Packard author of the Waste Makers and other social commentaries.
Speakers extended invitations include: ex-Governor George Wallace, Governor George Romney, Senator Charles Percy, Senator Edward Brook, Mayor John Lindsay, Governor Ronald Reagan, Senator Robert Kennedy, Walter Reuther, William F. Buckley and Abba Eban, foreign minister of Israel.
A two-day conference on the War in Viet Nam is tentatively being scheduled for late February or early March. It will feature Senator Mark O. Hatfield, Senator Warren Magnuson, Senator Frank Church, Senator Ernest Gruening, and Senator George Murphy.
