Speedy drivers beware: The Eugene Police Department’s traffic enforcement unit will be pulling more drivers off the road from now through the end of the month.
Joining a statewide effort to raise public awareness on safety belts, speed and impaired drivers, EPD traffic officers will focus on the enforcement of these laws. The Three Flags campaign, started by the Oregon Department of Transportation, targets excessive speed, driving under the influence of intoxicants and not using seat belts, which it says are the three leading factors in fatal crashes.
The campaign is named for the two states and one province that participate in it, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia.
In a press release, EPD reported that while targeting these traffic violations, the Three Flags campaign gives federal funding for the overtime required for officers throughout the state to take part in the two-week intensive enforcement period.
Jenna LaBounty, EPD public information specialist, said the traffic enforcement unit includes six officers and a sergeant who will work the additional shifts.
The press release also states that drivers and passengers must wear seat belts properly to avoid a ticket.
