Oregon (2-2) beat Stony Brook (0-3) in Baltimore, Md., Sunday by taking an early 4-0 lead and holding on in the final half despite being outscored by the SeaWolves.
Oregon freshman Catherine Davidson scored 3 goals, and Ilsa van den Berg scored two goals and had an assist in the 11-8 win.
Stony Brook scored six goals in the second half, but Oregon was able to score at the right time for the win. Alex Breiner scored a goal with 9:51 left in the game that put the Ducks ahead 10-5 after Stony Brook had scored two straight goals. Then, van den Berg scored with just under three minutes remaining to stop another two-goal streak by Stony Brook and go ahead 11-7.
No. 9 North Carolina started the Ducks’ road trip with a 15-7 loss on Friday. While Oregon (1-2) was led by Alicia Burkhart’s two goals, the Tar Heels got four goals and an assist from Jenn Russell.
Oregon fell behind 4-0 in the first 15 minutes of the game before Burkhart scored with 14:39 left in the half. After the teams traded goals, Carolina scored four of the game’s next five goals and led 10-3 at the half.
Oregon controlled much of the second half, scoring four goals, one less than Carolina, and nearly tied North Carolina in shots in the second half with 12.
If the Ducks stayed in the game with their shooting in the second half, their turnovers kept them out of any striking distance. Oregon committed 14 turnovers in the first half and 12 in the second to double North Carolina’s 13 turnovers.
