Chapman Hall is next on the university’s list to go under a major renovation, Dean of Robert D. Clark Honors College Terry Hunt said via email this morning.
With the building under renovation, Clark Honors College will move temporarily to McArthur Court starting summer 2016. McArthur Court, the University of Oregon’s former basketball court, has housed student groups and ASUO since the renovation of the Erb Memorial Union.
During the renovation, Hunt said CHC students will have the same access of amenities such as a library, kitchen, computer lab, print stations and reservable group study rooms.
The university has delayed the much-needed remodel on Chapman Hall due to the lack in funding since spring 2014. According to an Emerald’s report, Chapman Hall was built in 1939 and has not had any major renovation since. By next spring, 21 percent of the building needs to be replaced to qualify for seismic issues, energy efficiency, safety and ADA accessibility.
“The project will work to create a cohesive space within Chapman, will include classrooms that are better suited to the CHC’s seminar-style, and provide study spaces and common areas for faculty and students to interact both spontaneously and on structured projects,” Hunt said in the email.
Renovation cost is $7.5 million, which is paid with collective donations from CHC alums and the July 2015 Oregon legislature bond funding. The university expects the building to hold for the next 50 years after this remodel.
