The number of high-rise, “modern” apartments marketed as “luxury” student housing, such as the Patterson Student Housing, the Union on Broadway and the Rive, have been increasing in Eugene over the past couple of years.
While some of these buildings come with amenities and perks, such as stainless steel appliances, fitness rooms and rooftops overlooking the downtown area, some students have been vocal about these apartments and their issues — namely their quality.
UO sophomore Blake Goguen lives at the Rive and said he experienced issues with the building in terms of flooring.
“I’m not a beggar, I’m not a chooser,” Goguen said. “I have had issues. My roommates have also had the same issues. The flooring will come up a little bit [and] they won’t stay fully intact with the ground.”
Goguen said he is not aware if the issue is because of something he and his roommates are doing, or if there is something else that is causing the panels to lift.
“I will say the building is very good about maintenance,” Goguen said. “You don’t have to wait very long for things to be fixed.”
Goguen said he lives with a roommate who will be living at the Standard next year.
The Standard in Eugene is an apartment complex that has been under construction for over a year. Goguen said some of the main reasons for his roommate’s move have been the promise of amenities and brand-new apartments.
One student, sophomore Clare Elste, said she has experienced only minor issues while living at the Rive.
“I feel like they have pretty good appliances and stuff. Definitely, everything in the actual apartment is good,” Elste said. “It’s just the trash chutes that have a lot of problems.”
The Emerald reached out to the Rive and Core Spaces Management for comment on Goguen and Elste’s statements, but did not get a response back before publishing.
