Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich has been given a five-year contract extension, according to a press release from the athletic department Monday afternoon.
The extension is for $17.5 million with the annual average at $3.5 million per year. Incentives tied to the on-field performance and academic success of the team will remain in the contract.
“Mark has provided tremendous leadership of our football program and the values and character that he insists upon are in line with our mission as an institution,” Director of Athletics Rob Mullens told GoDucks.com. “The success of our student-athletes on the field and in the classroom will continue with Mark’s leadership and we are thrilled that he will stay at home in Oregon for a long time to come.”
Funding for the new contract will come solely from the Athletic Department funds, with no direct institutional support.
The extension will run through January 31, 2020.
Helfrich has enjoyed more success in his first two seasons at the helm than any other Duck football coach in school history, earning a 24-4 record. Only California’s Pappy Waldorf (1947-56) has a better start to a coaching career in what is now the Pac-12.
This past season Helfrich led his team to the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship, while also coaching the Ducks to a 59-20 Rose Bowl victory over Florida State.
