After Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh finished the women’s 100-meter dash in a dead heat for third place, the United States of America Track and Field Association was forced to determine a legitimate way to name the third and final member of the US team. If neither athlete declines their bid to London they will be given a choice between a run-off and a coin flip to determine who will be the third member of the U.S. team.
Both athletes have been notified of the decision but have not indicated a preference at this point. If Felix and Tarmoh can not agree on a method, a run-off will be scheduled before the conclusion of the Olympic Trials. If they both refuse to even name a preference, however, a coin-flip will be conducted where the athletes will be assigned either heads or tails of a US quarter dollar coin based on world ranking.
If a run-off results in an additional dead heat the coin flip method will be used.
These procedures were proposed by the USATF and approved by the United States Olympic Committee, which oversees the selection of all Olympic Teams. The same procedures will be used for any other race that results in a dead heat for the third place.
