Army Feth must be confused. In last week’s commentary (“NBA presents new role model: The Phoenix Suns,” ODE May 17) she guesses Bush’s nomination of Gen. Michael Hayden to the CIA Director’s post “may be a political strategy to shut down Donald Rumsfeld’s out-of-control spying habit.” In fact, Hayden was the director of the NSA from 1999 to 2005 and was responsible for the implementation of Bush’s illegal wiretapping program. In 2005 he showed blatant ignorance of the Constitution, insisting that the Fourth Amendment standard of probable cause did not exist. The President’s choice to nominate Hayden to be the first active military head of the CIA shows real dedication to the illegal spying program, as well as support for the unpopular Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld.
