Eugene attorney Lauren Regan will give a lecture on the U.S. government’s use of grand juries, criminal prosecution and confidential informants in its war on terrorism tonight at 6 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church.
As part of the Civil Liberties Defense Center’s ongoing mission to educate the public about the legal process, the event, “Grand Juries and Snitches and Spies, Oh My!” will present current information on law enforcement techniques for investigating crimes, according to a CLDC press release.
Regan will also discuss the use and abuse of tools such as grand jury investigations, where a person is forced to testify to the government and grand jurors in a courtroom without the assistance of counsel, the release stated.
CLDC is a nonprofit organization of attorneys dedicated to defending the civil rights of all citizens, particularly activists who confront political and legislative attacks on basic liberties, according to its Web site.
Tonight’s educational forum will focus on current cases in the U.S., particularly cases related to the USA Patriot Act and the infringement of civil liberties, according to the release.
