Margaret “Margie” Paris of the University’s School of Law signed on to act as dean for a full five-year term.
Paris was originally appointed as interim dean in January. From 2002-2005 she served as associate dean for academic affairs at the School of Law.
Paris is the first woman to fill the position as dean of a law school in the state of Oregon. Also, for the first time since the School of Law was established 123 years ago, all senior positions at the law school are filled by women being led by a female dean.
Paris’s work as dean will include student and faculty recruitment, fundraising and curriculum guidance.
A Chicago native and graduate of Northwestern University, Paris’s scholarly work focuses on criminal law and procedural issues. Paris teaches criminal law, criminal procedure and appellate advocacy.
Although Paris was unavailable for comment Tuesday, she said in a statement, “I love the University, this community and this law school. It is an honor to lead the UO School of Law.”
