A recent menu change in a residence hall café has altered the name of the Cheesy Griller, a sandwich of considerable girth and reputation, to “grilled cheese,” but in the hearts and minds of many students, it will forever be known as Cheesy Griller.
The sandwich, two pieces of Texas Toast slathered in melted cheese, is available exclusively at the Common Grounds Café in the Hamilton residence hall for two meal points and is a staple of late-night cuisine for freshmen. The café is open until 2:00 a.m., and it’s a common sight to see students lined up at 1:45 a.m. to order one (or several) of the sandwiches.
“It’s a tradition,” said freshman Devin Huynh. “When I came here for orientation, I was told to try the Cheesy Griller, but when I got here, it wasn’t on the menu. I thought it was an underground thing.”
Common Grounds employees said the name change was accidental. A new menu was ordered for the beginning of the school year, but when it arrived, Cheesy Griller was gone, replaced by the more common sobriquet, “grilled cheese.”
On Friday, a Common Grounds employee taped a piece of paper over the offending name, changing it to Cheezy Griller. The paper remained up until Tuesday, when it was removed.
“Most of the people who worked here last year are trying to get kids to still call it Cheesy Griller,” said Paoa Wandke, a Common Grounds employee. “I feel like if it was an accident, we should be able to get a new menu with Cheesy Griller back.”
University Director of Food Services Tom Driscoll called the typo “an unfortunate mistake” and said it would be fixed the next time the menu was reprinted. On the Common Grounds Café Web site, the item is still listed as Cheesy Griller.
Deena Wanstall, another Common Grounds employee, said the Cheesy Griller has been on the menu at least since she started working there six years ago.
Students expressed surprise and indignation across the board when told of the news.
“I personally feel the backwards syntax was essential to its success as a sandwich,” said University student Cara Merendino.
“People make friends with freshmen just to get Cheesy Grillers,” added student Lex Chase.
Currently there are two Facebook groups dedicated to the Cheesy Griller: “I Love Cheesy Grillers!” and “Cheesy Griller Lovers!”
The name change has ruffled Duck feathers all the way through the corridors of student power.
“That is not change I can believe in,” said ASUO senator Demic Tipitino.
As of press time, the ASUO has not taken any action or position on the Cheesy Griller issue.
