The Oregon stunts and gymnastics team defeated Portland State University and Cal Poly en route to its fifth first-place finish of the season on Sunday afternoon at the Northwest Invitational.
In the final home meet of the season at McArthur Court, Oregon placed first in the stunts, pyramids, tumbling and team routine, while finishing second to Portland State in the basket portion.
The Ducks ended the day with an overall team score of 245.06. Portland State finished second with 216.88 and Cal Poly rounded out the scoring with a mark of 215.45. The Ducks were head and shoulders above the competition in the final team routine, recording a score of 94.40 compared to just 75.90 for PSU and 74.67 for Cal Poly.
Oregon was without junior Rali Manolova and freshman Samantha Schulze, who were both in uniform but each had a protective boot covering their lower left legs and ankles. Manolova played a key role in the tumbling competition during Oregon’s first meet at Mac Court on Feb. 21. In her place, freshman Julia Magdelino recorded a score of 9.83 and senior Tori Mayard dominated the wildcard tumbling section with a score of 10.08.
The Ducks will be back in action on March 13-14, when they travel to Portland for the Pac-West St. Paddy’s Open. That meet will be the final regular season tune-up before the squad heads to Daytona Beach, Fla., to participate in the National Cheerleading Association National Championships on April 8 and 9.
