The Oregon Ducks baseball team swept the Gonzaga Bulldogs in a historic way Wednesday afternoon, scoring 19 runs, accumulating 25 hits, and hitting four home runs in a 19-10 win.
The 25 hits ties an all-time record for the program, as the Oregon offense exploded against the Bulldogs.
Seventeen different hitters came to the plate for Oregon (25-12), with eight of them getting multiple hits. Catcher Eddie Rodriguez broke out of a slump, going 4 for 4 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Shortstop KC Serna, second baseman Danny Pulfer, third baseman Dylan Gavin, and outfielder Steven Packard all hit home runs to set a modern era record.
Oregon started scoring in the second inning with three runs, including Serna’s homer, and didn’t quit until the seventh. Packard hit his home run in the third after Rodriguez doubled to start the inning, all part of a three run third. Two more runs followed in the fourth, five in the fifth, and three more in the sixth. By the seventh, Oregon was up 16-7 and added three runs in the seventh to reach an unprecedented plateau.
On the mound, Madison Boer (2-1) earned the win, giving up four runs on six hits in four innings of work. Christian Jones (three runs), Ryan Hambright (two runs), and Drew Gagnier (one run) all gave up scores in relief.
The 10 runs are the second most given up this season by the Ducks, and the most since Oregon lost 11-7 at Pepperdine in the third game of the season on Feb. 21
Next up for the Ducks is USC in Eugene starting Friday at 7 p.m. The Ducks are currently sixth in the Pacific-10 Conference with a 6-6 record.
