Special Sections Editor

As a salaried employee, hours will vary, but the special sections editor must be able to work an average of 20 hours per week. The special sections editor coordinates a staff of up to 20 beginning and intermediate reporters and coordinates efforts among the design, photo and copy desks to produce the Emerald’s 10-12 special sections throughout the year and will be specifically expected to:

  • Work with the special sections reporters to generate story ideas
  • Coordinate the creation of supplements by generating story ideas, assigning stories to reporters and posting photo tipsheets for those stories
  • Communicate with the advertising staff and creative services about needs for the special sections and advertising deadlines
  • Line edit stories prior to publication to identify problems, such as libel, inaccuracy, wordiness or lack of clarity
  • Assist special sections reporters with writing and in improving their work
  • Keep a list of all freelancers with contact and pertinent information and update as necessary
  • Look out for freelancers with potential to join staff, and help train and develop those freelancers
  • Become familiar with the rules of the Associated Press and Emerald style
  • Coordinate with the graphics department to ensure as many stories as possible have a visual element with them by posting photo and graphic tips
  • Advise the editor in chief and managing editor on issues regarding the special sections
  • Meet daily deadlines and ensure reporters do as well
  • Monitor reporters for compliance of job duties
  • Assist in the hiring of special sections reporters
  • Ensure that all reporters are effectively utilized and receive ongoing training
  • Keep regular office hours
  • Attend required staff meetings, and schedule weekly desk meetings with reporters to discuss problems and plan coverage
  • Attend week ahead meetings on Sunday and budget meetings at 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
  • Monitor the news daily to keep abreast of all issues that need to be covered, and see that no pertinent news is missed
  • Set individual goals each term to improve journalistic skills, and help others set goals to improve their journalistic skills
